If anyone of you is keen, feel free to let me know about it soon, preferably by March. If you want to travel but not to Thailand, also do let me know. The date of travel is supposedly to be during early April. The fees for traveling should be ranged S$200+ to S$300+ (may include lodging but excluding your shopping expenses).

*Transportation wise we should be travelling by budget airline, unless all agreed on other mode of transportation.

PLEASE REPLY TO ME ASAP. YOUR EFFORT TO REPLY ME IS APPRECIATED.

Singapore polytechnics and ITE to increase tuition fees

Video: Singapore polytechnics and ITE to increase tuition fees

SINGAPORE: Singapore's polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) may have held off their planned fee hike last year due to the financial crisis.

But now that the economy has turned the corner, they have decided to increase tuition fees for this academic year starting April - the first increase since 2006.

The policy of differentiating between citizens and non-citizens will apply here as well. The increase ranges from a low of S$10 per year for Singaporeans to a high of over S$3,200 a year for foreign students.

Singapore's five polytechnics will increase tuition fees for diploma courses in the new academic year by S$50 for citizens, who will now pay S$2,150 per year.

Three of the polytechnics - Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic - will also increase the fees for their existing Polytechnic-Foreign Specialised Institution degree courses by three per cent this academic year.

Singapore citizens pursuing such degree courses will pay fees ranging between S$4,830 and S$8,040 a year. The new fees will apply to new and existing students. But Permanent Residents (PRs) and foreign students will have to pay S$480 more.

PRs and foreign students admitted before this academic year will also pay higher fees, but computed using the existing fee framework.

Tan Han Cheong, principal, Singapore Polytechnic said: "There is always never a good time to raise fees obviously, but we think that we need to put the fees truer to the cost. Even now with the increase in fees, the fees are only about 15 per cent or less of the full cost of educating a student in a polytechnic."

Over at the ITE, tuition fees for Nitec and Higher Nitec courses will go up by S$10 for Singaporeans. ITE will also up the fees for its Technical Engineer Diploma courses by S$50 per year to S$2,150.

Likewise, there will be a sharper differentiation between the fees citizens pay, compared to PRs and foreigners. Fees for new PR students will increase by at least S$600 per year, while those for new International students will go up by at least S$1,450.

The revised fee differentiation will also apply to PRs and International students pursuing new modules under the subsidised part-time ITE courses from April onwards. Heng Guan Teck, deputy CEO, Academic Division, Institute of Technical Education said: "The impact on the number of foreign students coming to us will be very minimal because we have a very small number of foreign students in ITE."

Mr Tan said: "Of course there are some families overseas who may think the fees are out of their reach, but I think there are a lot of students in Asia who think our education system is world class, so they will continue to send their children here."

The polytechnics and ITE said they will have adequate assistance schemes in place for students who have financial difficulties.

There is no word yet on whether the three local universities - NUS, NTU and SMU - will increase their fees. They said changes in fees, if any, will be announced in due course.

Airline Manager: 5th Freedom Rights

Hi Class,

This announcement concerns ALOMGT Assignment 1 (Airline Manager)

It has come to Wee Li's attention that while playing Airline Manager (according to the assignment requirements), many are misusing the 5th freedom of flight when doing route planning.

According to the 5th freedom, you are only allowed to have one fifth freedom flight per country.

This means that for example, if your Base is in Singapore, and you do a Singapore-Beijing Flight, you are only allowed to do an onward sector from to a third country. If you are doing more than one flight, that would be classified under the 7th freedom, and not the 5th freedom.

Mr Lee Wee Li has agreed to extend the deadline for Airline Manager to Sunday, 13th December 2009, for everyone to fix our routes. Thus, the final day of operations for everyone's Airline shall be on that day.

Please review your route network and make the necessary changes to your routes.
